Leadership potential

Leadership potential

You are unlikely to start out in a senior role after graduating but if you can demonstrate the potential to lead others, employers are more likely to want to invest in you to develop your career.

Leadership is a varied mix of skills and attributes that are hard to define. The Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) describes it as follows:

“Leadership is very much about the ability to influence people by personal attributes and behaviours.”

There is no one formula for successful leadership but the relevant competencies and qualities include:

  • general intelligence
  • technical professional knowledge and competence
  • personality – leaders should be energetic, committed and understand people
  • the ability to inspire
  • being able to listen, share and delegate
  • self-knowledge

See the Evidencing leadership potential guide for help with where you can find examples of these areas.
