Numeracy skills

Whatever your role, you must be able to understand common forms of numerical data like percentages, graphs, charts and spreadsheets. You don’t need to be a mathematician but you do need to show you can analyse number-related factors such as profitability, value for money and trends and changes.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) definition of numeracy skills includes:

  • the manipulation of numbers
  • general mathematical awareness
  • application of numeracy in practical contexts such as measuring, weighing, estimating and applying formulae

See the Evidencing numeracy skills guide for help with where you can find examples to demonstrate these areas.

It’s really essential for graduates now to understand the commercials of a company that they work for. You have to get to grips with the bottom line of the budgets in the company - where to save costs, where to drive the revenue etc.
