Self-management skills

Most employers will support graduates with training and development opportunities, but they will only select you if you prove you can already manage yourself and your workload effectively.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) definition of self-management includes:

  • flexibility
  • resilience
  • self-starting
  • appropriate assertiveness
  • time management
  • readiness to improve your own performance based on feedback
  • reflective learning and readiness to accept responsibility

See the Evidencing self-management skills guide for help with where you can find examples to demonstrate these areas.

The key attribute would be flexibility. A willingness to learn. Not to be rigid in their career path. Be flexible and realise that there is more than one route to get to where they want to.
