Asking the interviewer

Asking the interviewer

Ensure you have questions to ask the interviewer. These should be about the role or organization, not about salary or benefits.

‘Do you have anything you’d like to ask?’ is a question that often comes up at the end of an interview and it is one which many candidates dread. In fact, it is a chance for you to show further interest and enthusiasm in the role so be prepared!

The Rules

  • Prepare some questions in advance.
  • Ask about anything that was not clarified in the course of the interview.
  • Take the opportunity to add any personal selling points that you did not have a chance to bring up earlier in the interview.
  • Ask questions that show a genuine interest in the company and indicate that you are thinking in the long-term.
  • Avoid asking questions about salary, holiday entitlement or anything that you could have found out yourself.
  • Avoid asking questions like ‘Can you tell me about the training and development available to the successful candidate’? It gives the impression you are interested in what you can get out of the company, not what you can give.

Examples of questions you could ask

  • What would you see as the main priority for the post holder on commencing the job?
  • What are some of the challenges faced by the person performing this role?
  • How would you describe the culture of this organisation?
  • What are some of the objectives you would like to see achieved in this job?
