You can learn from every interview whether you get the job or not. These rules help you make sure you learn from every experience.

The Rules

• Reflect on how it went. Note down your thoughts on the interview: how well you answered the questions; what you learnt about the role and the company; things you wish you'd said or asked about. You won’t be offered every job you go for and these immediate reflections will help you prepare for the next one.
• Think about the questions that you found difficult to answer and rehearse these for next time.
• If you don’t hear by the time agreed, phone or e-mail to ask politely if a decision has been made.
• Ask for feedback. If you’re unsuccessful, phone or e-mail the interviewer to ask how you did. This is another (sometimes painful!) way of learning and improving your interview preparation and technique.
• Stay positive. It can take time and effort to improve your confidence and technique with interviews so don't be discouraged if your first efforts are unsuccessful.
